Description: With long slender stems and round to heart-shaped green leaves, the floating pennywort (Centella Cordifolia) is a delicate beauty, it sways in the wind and wafts across swamps. With its direct connotations to the ecology and landscape of Sorrento and the surrounding peninsula and its historical use as a medicinal herb applied to the skin, the floating pennywort is the inspiration behind the botanical motifs created for the Aurora Wellness spa at the Continental Hotel Sorrento.
The journey through Aurora from the first display of copper pieces at the entry, to the last and largest mural deep inside the bathhouse, is influenced by the motion of moving coastal winds; as if a gust were carrying guests gently through the venue.
Each piece is crafted from copper sheet metal, hand-shaped to reference the form of the Centella leaf and gently patinated. The floating forms stand off the wall on a delicate copper stem.
With over 560 elements, the murals were meticulously surveyed and installed over six locations throughout the wellness spa.
