Over the past year, the highly skilled team at Axolotl Art Projects (AAP) have collaborated with renowned design studio Broached Commissions to bring to life a breathtaking transformation of the iconic Continental Hotel in the charming seaside town of Sorrento, Melbourne.
With a focus on delivering unique and captivating pieces, AAP partnered closely with acclaimed designer Adam Goodrum and Broached to craft "Whorl", an inspiring dichroic glass mobile. This was a central expression of the Broached curatorial focus on flowers. Hanging elegantly in the hotel's atrium space that connects the heritage and new wing of the complex, the installation comprises 48 handcrafted glass panels, each one meticulously shaped and polished. The mobile's dichroic glass splashes coloured light throughout the space, bathing the space in a mesmerising glow.
Additionally, the Axolotl team were entrusted with the production of a second expansive installation entitled "Centella", designed by Broached Commissions. Broached selected this plant because it is native to the coastal area and its historical use as a medicinal herb made it perfect for the healing program of the Aurora day spa. This gentle, yet expansive work required the creation and installation of over 560 individual copper elements that present as six distinct sculptural murals positioned at pivotal moments in the Aurora spa. Each of these elements was meticulously surveyed and installed by the skilled team at Axolotl, resulting in a truly stunning work of art that enhances the tranquil atmosphere of the spa.
Overall, through our collaboration with Broached Commissions, Axolotl has once again demonstrated our unwavering commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and design, bringing to life two unique and remarkable pieces that have truly elevated the Continental Hotel to new heights of elegance and sophistication.
